More volume means fewer miles for Morrisons

Double-deck loading for an efficient fleet

Wm Morrison, the UK’s fourth largest supermarket chain, has cut vehicle usage within its food distribution by drawing on the services of Buffaload Logistics.

Operating between food suppliers and Morrisons’ regional distribution centres in Norwich, Wakefield, Kettering, Bellshill, Stockton and Bridgewater, Buffaload’s 44 pallet-capacity, temperature controlled double-deck trailers carry chilled foods which are then consolidated for onward delivery to over 600 stores throughout the UK.

According to Wes Smallwoods, from Morrisons’ fresh meat processing plant in Deeside, Buffaload and Morrisons have worked closely together for over two years to optimise handling times and improve vehicle utilisation.

“Our objective is to bring fresh food to all our stores in perfect condition, while keeping transport and distribution costs to a minimum. With the Buffaload double-deckers, we are able to load greater volumes and use fewer vehicles, which in turn, reduces road miles and takes out cost.”

To accommodate the double-deckers’ extra height, Morrisons called upon Buffaload’s engineering team to modify a number of their existing loading bays, while two new bays were purpose-built.

Buffaload Logistics is a Cambridgeshire based family-owned business who provide total logistics solutions, together with pallet storage and truck and double-deck trailer rental. The company’s double-deck trailer fleet stands at 72 and is complemented by a number of urban, single axle refrigerated trailers.

The company has recently expanded its cross-docking facility at its 16 acre Huntingdon site and during 2014 took delivery of 31 new double-deck trailers – moves which reflect Buffaload’s ambitious short term growth plan.
