apetito, the UK’s leading provider of frozen meals to hospitals, care homes and local authorities, has added an additional double-deck temperature controlled trailer from Buffaload Logistics to its vehicle fleet which, says Daniel Paull, Distribution Manager, helps to accommodate growth and increase resilience with its existing fleet- which is due for renewal later this year.
From apetito’s National Distribution Centre in Royal Portbury Dock, Avonmouth apetito deliver picked frozen food orders to 5 Regional Distribution Centres every evening for cross docking and radial distribution to their customers.
To cope with the recent Christmas peak business requirement, apetito took delivery of a double-deck trailer from Buffaload on a rental basis which made a significant contribution to enabling best- ever service levels over the festive period by accommodating the increased capacity requirement and reducing demand on the already heavily utilised existing fleet, says Distribution Manager Daniel Paull.
“We were one of the early users of the double-deck trailer concept and our first fleet commissioned 20 years ago. Currently we have six Gray & Adams double-deck reefer trailers in our fleet” he explains, “and the savings they bring are undeniable. The high volume 78 roll cage or 40 pallet capacity means that we can effectively use one trailer to trunk to a regional distribution centre, whereas using conventional single decks would require two tractors and trailers and therefore twice as much fuel.”
“Our G&A double-deck trailers are configured with hydraulic variable height floors, GPS tracking and telematic location and temperature monitoring whilst in transit.”
“Efficient fleet management is critical to our operation” continues Daniel Paull, “and with these trailers, we not only benefit from the additional loading capacity, but also from reduced running costs and environmentally-critical carbon reduction.”
“Our job is to ensure that the product reaches our customers in perfect condition, on time and as efficiently as possible” adds Daniel Paull. “To this end, these double-deck trailers play an important role: temperatures are constant, down-time is low and costs are kept to a minimum. Also, by optimising vehicle utilisation and reducing mileage and fuel usage we have the added benefit of keeping Co2 emissions down, as part of our commitment to improving environmental conditions.”
Daniel Paull concludes, “We are happy to report that continually increasing demand has meant that we have just added another two double-deckers to our fleet, again on long-term rental from Buffaload, who have given us exceptional service.”
